becoming the priority
a 12 week journey toward guilt-free art making and rest, for tired creatives and overly-generous busy bodies.
Becoming the Priority is a guided creative journey for people who struggle to slow down, prioritise self-care, and want to become more expressive. Learn to put yourself first with creative rest so you can be the impactful, supportive person you want to be without destroying yourself.
You’re doing well in work, navigating adult life. You’ve got nice friends and prioritise your physical health. You do morning pages, follow the Instagram accounts that inspire you, unfollow the ones that make you feel rubbish. You’re known as the supportive friend, the creative one, the one I can rely on.
But, to steal a line from Lewis Caroll’s Alice Through the Looking-Glass, you’ve lost your muchness.
You don’t feel like you. You’re tired and overstretched. You catch yourself dishing out advice that you wish you would follow. You keep pushing to the next challenge, the next success, the next event, but you feel flat, uninspired, thin, and disconnected from what you really want.
👇 I’m going to say it 👇
You’re probably doing too much, giving too much.
I see you. And I’m here to tell you it’s time to slow down.
Making art is a wonderful way to come back to yourself, soothe your nervous system, and rebalance no matter what’s going on. Ready to move into a space of knowing, trusting, and loving yourself with ease so you can be the most you version of you?
Right this way 👇
.ꕤ(ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ.゚
Creative, do you want your mojo back?
Overly-generous busy body, are you ready to look after yourself too?
In our time becoming, I introduce you to ways to reconnect throughout the day with mindful art making, meditation, and journaling so you’re more aware of your limits, can adjust when you notice yourself going off balance, and generally feel better because you’re inspired and connected.
By the end of our sessions, you’ll know the rituals that suit you, trust your creative spirit, and have an empowered belief system that makes it easier to fill your cup first.
How becoming the priority made me a better friend and impactful business owner
As a friend…
I always put others before me, even when I was exhausted or unhappy. I had issues sharing how I felt because I was hyper conscious of making sure everyone else was okay. And I often just went along with what other’s wanted, even if it meant giving up what I love (like making art).
A few years ago, I started reading The Artist’s Way. I never finished the book but became devoted to the practice of morning pages, catalysing my journey towards Creative Tea Breaks, self-wisdom, and becoming my own priority.
My creative spirit became more playful, which was really inspiring. But I also discovered I was frustrated and I’d been ignoring my feelings. I felt like people didn’t actually know me … and in many cases they didn’t because I didn’t let them. I’d meet friends, ask questions, be curious, laugh along, but I didn’t share anything unless I was asked a direct question and even then I struggled to be open.
For the first time, I saw the impact of not prioritising myself: it was damaging my friendships or stopping them forming, leaving me frustrated, blocked, and sometimes hollow or trapped inside my feelings. But the ending is happy, because from creative rest in morning pages, I gained the wisdom I needed to make changes and this has only got better the more I put myself first.
As a fledgling business owner…
I panicked into feast and famine freelance jobs, first doing transcription, then adding language teaching, then adding creative writing on top. I felt lonely, unhappy, unsatisfied and really tired because I was just juggling and pushing through.
☠︎︎
Then me and my husband did something radical and took a month off work to cycle from Slovenia to the UK in memory of my dad, bickpacking, camping and self-navigating for 31 days (plus raising a lot of money for cancer charities).
To say the journey enlightened me would be an understatement. I felt all floaty and knowledgeable like never before, and 100% ready to do something wild: work full time with creativity, baby!
I stopped language teaching, said goodbye to transcribing, signed up for business coaching with Jess Bruno (the legend). And started making my world art, creative rest, and spreading joy.
This was the start of a tapestry that I continued weaving over the last year and half that looks like:
creativity + prioritising self-care + good communication + healthy relationships = happiness and incredible things coming your way!!
Then, I found Yumi Sakugawa on Instagram and received round 2 of my enlightenment with this question: What would your life look like if you infused joy into it as much as possible, rather than waiting to reward yourself?
Now, for me, creativity is a vehicle to joy, doodling, colouring, pattern making, writing poetry. And I took this invitation very seriously. I prioritised myself with creative rest more and more and paid attention to the impact it had on me.
By infusing joy, a.k.a becoming the priority, I felt happier, more self-trusting, braver, more fun, playful and silly, it got me dancing, seeing people differently, opening up, and everything just got brighter.
When I made the shift to infuse joy and be the priority:
♡ Hard stuff at work got easier.
♡ I communicated better with my loved ones.
♡ I felt more able to set boundaries that protected my energy first.
♡ I found myself coming up with better ideas and really trusting them, so I started making more impactful work that inspired me and others.
♡ And I started seeing my people through a new lens, appreciating them more with extra clarity, gratitude and love.
♡ And I felt more me, brimming with muchness!
Why did I take up all that space to explain my journey?
Because I am just like you.
We are the advocates for self-care, rest, therapy, art making, being gentle for others.
I know how hard it is for you to prioritise yourself and rest because I walked the everyone-else-first walk and did work-first dance, giving too much and burning myself out.
And here’s the thing you need to know:
It doesn’t make us better family members, friends, business people, let alone feel better, to give first.
I couldn’t keep it. You can’t either. It was split you in two.
To be the impactful, kind, loving, supportive person you want to be, you have to fill your cup first!
Creative rest takes the edge off tense times and helps us feel lighter.
It’s taken me years of journaling, meditation, mindful art, healing work, self-help books, job changes, and oodles of radical self-love and compassion to grow the practice that I have today.
Now I ‘m here to share what I know and my skills as a guide with you so you can cultivate your practice faster and keep moving forward when becoming the priority gets difficult.
Old habits are hard to break. Your inner critic will tell you unhelpful things. And sometimes people will make you feel like you’re being selfish, even if they love. None of us like change.
As your guide, I help you see and befriend the thoughts that stop you putting yourself first and resting when you need it. Once you know and release those thoughts, it gets easier and easier to become devoted to this restful practice that will change your life for the better.
As well as uncovering thoughts and inviting you to make art, I help you embody the ways your creative rest is impacting you with meditation so you fully understand it’s influence, which makes the whole journey easier and more likely to stick for life.
Let’s face it, it’s really difficult to put yourself first.
A guide giving you permission and encouragement helps.
From creative rest, you…
- nurture a beautiful relationship with yourself, exploring thoughts, feelings and the quiet spaces in between,
- feel enriched and nourished, more at ease and whole,
- are still there for your community but you turn up from a place of plenty rather than lack,
- are successful in a way that reflects your values and aims,
- feel more in sync with your life and the universe,
- feel more accepting of the unknown and able to release control,
- trust yourself and make better decisions,
- you continuously excavate knowledge from rest and can alchemise that with ease and confidence.
Resistance
You might feel resistance to this journey because this is not the role you’re used to filling. Plus, school and society don’t encourage self-care, personal development for emotions and feelings, let alone fostering a deep connection with yourself.
But have you ever cheered on a friend that just started therapy?
Or admired a friend learning a new language or pottery?
Or have you, like me, felt pulled towards personal discovery for years and spent a huge amount of energy suppressing that desire and it not going away no matter how much you push it down?
So I ask you this:
♥︎ What is more important than living in a way that reflects your values?
♥︎ Than bringing your voice and ideas into the world in the truest way possible so they can create positive change?
♥︎ Than being able to support yourself and as a result lift up your community and celebrate them too?
This isn’t silly or indulgent work.
You don’t need to feel guilty for wanting to devote time to yourself.
Guilt and self-consciousness here comes from the protective part of your brain that wants you to stay where you are because it’s safe and you know how things work there.
You want to live more deeply and contribute towards a better world for your community and the wider world. That’s hard core!!
And I am cheering you on so hard.
How does this offering work?
♡ Meeting each other
We jump on a free 30-minute call to discuss your relationship with creativity, rest, schedules, general feelings at the moment, and what being a priority means to you. You can also ask me any questions that are getting in way of making this decision.
If we connect, we sign a contract, book in our first session, and create a messaging channel.
If we don’t connect, no hard feelings •ᴗ• You carry on your journey to find the right support for you at this time.
♡ Starting the journey
In session one, we dive into journalling and easy art practices to uncover and begin dismantling unhelpful internal narratives. We also set intentions for infusing more joy into your life solo, and we start the practice of embodying the impacts of art on you with meditation.
♡ Becoming
Then we continually bringing you closer and more lovingly towards your creative spirit, getting playful and comfortable with imperfection by pattern making, doodling, zine making, free writing, exploring other people’s art and much, much more. We continue to reflect and embody our creativity, becoming more aware, wise, and devoted with every session.
♡ Support outside of sessions
Throughout these weeks, you’ll have unlimited weekday access to me via email or WhatsApp. I send you two messages a week. One is a creative prompt to help you get active and the other a general check-in. I encourage you can ask questions and share your rituals here as well so we can celebrate your journey as it helps with setting roots and reducing resistance to becoming the priority of your life.
♡ Closing our practice together
Before you move into the independent phase of becoming the priority of your life, I prepare a closing session where we reflect on the whole experience, how you’re feeling about being the priority now, and we make dedications to future work. This is a real celebration of your transformation and the self-work to come.
Your transformation looks like…
- being the priority
- feeling easy, whole, wise
- able to just be
- taking creative rest most days without guilt
- a pile of imperfect, expressive art made just for you
- smiling, relaxing, laughing
- responding to stress or uncertainty with your creative rituals
- sharing what you learn from your practice with your community
- scrolling and comparing less
- watching less TV
- soothing your nervous system with your rituals
- feeling deeply loved and self-supported
- making decisions with ease because you trust yourself
- knowing that no matter what comes up, you won’t fall because you have creative rituals and the self-knowledge to catch yourself
